Common questions

What does “pay yourself first” mean?

Instead of saving whatever happens to be left at the end of the month, you set your savings and investments aside first and plan your expenses around what remains. Payself’s default template puts those categories at the top, and defines every category as a percentage of your income so the plan scales to whatever you earn.

Where is my data stored?

Entirely on your device. Payself has no account, no server, and makes no network connections at all. Nothing you enter is ever uploaded — see the privacy policy.

How do I get my data out?

Open Settings → Your Data → Export as CSV. Payself creates two files — a budget summary and a full transaction list — and passes them to the iOS share sheet, so you can save them to Files, email them to yourself, or AirDrop them to a computer. They open directly in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.

Does Payself convert between currencies?

No, and this is deliberate. Payself supports 57 currencies for display only. It holds no exchange rates, so switching currency relabels your figures rather than recalculating them. An app with no network connection cannot fetch live rates, and showing stale ones would be worse than showing none.

Why is one of my categories missing from the transaction feed?

The feed lists individual transactions, so it only shows categories you have itemized. If you track a category as a single lump‑sum figure, it has no individual entries to list. That is why the feed’s total can legitimately be lower than your total spent — the app notes this underneath the feed.

How do recurring transactions work?

Open any category’s transaction list and tap Repeat to set a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly rule with a start and optional end date. Payself generates the entries automatically, never into the future, and never twice for the same date — so deleting a generated entry does not bring it back. Rules carry forward when you create a new month.

Does Payself sync between my iPhone and iPad?

Not currently. Being fully offline with no account is the core promise of the app, so each device keeps its own data. You can move a snapshot across with CSV export. If sync is ever added it will be opt‑in and will never be required to use the app.

I renamed a category and something looks wrong.

Renaming is safe. Your emergency‑fund and investment goals follow the category itself, not its name, so you can rename or translate them freely without losing their running totals.

How do I change the default categories?

Tap the gear icon in the month controls to edit the template — your default income and the categories used to seed each new month. Existing months keep the categories they already have.
